Animals in Winter

Introduction:

After we read The Hat by Jan Brett, do you wonder what animals really do to get ready for winter? They can't buy a winter coat or turn up the heat like we do! Let's explore to learn what animals really do to stay warm and have food to eat.

Task

You and your computer partner will work together to explore the animal site assigned by your teacher. You will make storyboards about two animals in your site. You may help your partner as you work to show the winter preparation of two different animals. You will use these storyboards to publish your pages of a class book using KidPix.

Resources:

Check out these fun websites to see how your animals are surviving the winter.

Explore the world of the Nappers and Snackers.

Visit the lazy world of the True Hibernators.

Move to another place with the Migrators.

Roam with the Active Animals.

Find out how some animals do get special Winter Coats.

Process:

1.Your teacher will assign you to one of six groups for exploration.

2. In your group, you will have a partner to explore with you.

2. Check out the website for your group of animals.

3. After you read all the information at the website, print a worksheet to record your findings.

4. Meet with other members of your animal group to plan your pages for the book so that each person chooses a different animal for the class book.

5. Make a storyboard for your page. Your teacher will give you this worksheet.

6. Take your turn with KidPix to make your page of the book.

Evaluation:

Check to see if you did each of these.

I completed my worksheet about the animals in my group.

I made my storyboard to plan my book page.

I made my page for the book using KidPix.

Conclusion:

Upon completing the classbook, we will hang the individual pages in the hall and let each student have a chance to take a "trip through the pages."
