Recess
Recess runs from 9:55 – 10:07 each morning. All students are expected to go outside for fresh air and exercise. Notes are needed in order for your child to stay inside at recess time when he/she may be sick, or have a cold. Please know that your child is not supervised at these times and he/she is expected to read, colour or draw quietly at their desks. Also consider that, if they are appropriately dressed, a little fresh air may be the best medicine.
Lunch Procedures
Edgewater Elementary School encourages healthy food for snacks and lunch - minimal sugar. As we are a Green School, we encourage minimal packaging too. We also recycle.
Lunch is from 11:40 – 12:30, Monday to Thursday. Students go outside for fresh air and exercise for 20 minutes before coming inside to eat lunch. Most students stay at school unless they live nearby and have a parent home to supervise. Please inform your child’s teacher if your child will be going home for lunch each day.
Students who are not going home for lunch will be expected to bring a lunch from home and to eat in the classroom, using best manners. A student whose behaviour during lunch hour becomes disruptive or dangerous to other children may lose the privilege of eating lunch at school. The school reserves the right to have the student spend the lunch hour at home or under other supervision arranged by the parent off of the school grounds.
Dismissal
The children are dismissed from school at 2:30 each afternoon, except for Fridays when the dismissal is 12:30 pm.
Bus Passes
If your child needs to ride a bus on which s/he isn’t a regular passenger, s/he will need to bring a permission note from home into the office before 11:00 am in order to receive a bus pass. Access to bus travel will depend on space.
Indoor Shoe Policy
In order to promote respect for our school’s custodian and keep our school floors as clean as possible, students are asked to change their footwear when they enter the building. We request that parents and visitors model this practice when they enter the school.
Health & Safety Issues
The staff of Edgewater Elementary make a point to be aware of the general health and well-being of the students. You will be contacted if we notice anything out of the ordinary. If your child becomes ill or suffers an injury at school, you or your emergency contact will be called. Please keep your phone numbers up to date.
Lice -A whole school check will occur monthly. This parasite is a major nuisance in schools. Once a child has been treated and nits have been combed out, s/he may return to school.
Medicine -If your child requires the administration of any medicine at school the secretary must be informed and your doctor must compete the required forms. Children should not be sent to school with any type of nonprescription medicine.
Injuries – Staff members who have first aid training are always available to deal with minor injuries. Parents will be informed in the case of any problems that may require additional attention.
Safety to and from school – The safety of our students is very important to us.
Students are required to wear an approved bicycle helmet to school.
We want to hear about any difficulties that your child may have going to and from school. This includes problems with other children as well as any inappropriate approaches by strangers.
We also want to know who has permission to pick up your child after school. If there is a change in your usual routine, please call the school.
Parents who pick up or drop off children should be aware of that the parking lot needs to be kept clear for busses.
Guidelines for Parents
*You are our partners and you are welcome at school!
*Be involved and be informed. Take an active role no matter how big or small in the Parent Advisory Council or School Planning Council. You input is valued!
*Make sure you read school newsletters and check student agendas for important information and upcoming events. Let us know if you would like to receive your newsletter via email.
A Process for Parent Concerns
Call us!
1.Parents having a concern about classroom practices or their child’s education program should deal first directly with the teacher involved. If the concern is not resolved at the classroom level, then it is appropriate to go to the principal.
2.If you have a concern regarding general school operations or policies, then the principal should be approached directly.
3.Parents whose concerns are not resolved at the school level may choose to go to the Human Resources Department at the Windermere Zone at 342-9243.
Custody
School personnel cannot talk to anyone about a student unless that person is listed on the registration form. We rely on the parent who has the day-to-day responsibility for the child to inform us if a former spouse or new relationship has permission to act in the role of a parent.
Meeting with Teachers
If you need to talk to your child’s teacher, please call to set up a convenient time when you will have his or her full attention. Before school is a busy time for teachers, as they like to greet the children upon their arrival. Once school is in session, the teacher needs to devote his/her attention to the students.
No Smoking
There is a ban on smoking on school grounds in compliance with School District Policy # 5180. This applies to all adults, including workers, staff, visitors and parents. The school grounds includes the parking lot.
Sleep
Your child’s teachers believe that it is very important for students to have adequate rest if they are to do their best in school. Boys and girls who do not have enough sleep at night are irritable, unable to concentrate and tire easily during mental or physical work.
While children differ in the amount of rest that they require each night, a good guideline is 11 to 12 hours for primary and 10 to 11 hours for intermediate students. If your child is able to get out of bed easily each morning and is happy and alert thoughout the day, he or she is probably getting enough sleep.
Please help us establish bedtime routines with your children.
