April, 2011
I’d like to congratulate all of our winter sportathletes for their time, effort, and dedication to their sport and thank all of the coaches as well.
The Senior Girls basketball team finished their season as the top ranked team in the Kootenays and with a number of top 3 tournament finishes. The girls dream of qualifying for Provincials was unfortunately shattered with a heart breaking loss to DTSS at the Kootenay Zones. Nonetheless, the girls played hard all season long and were a force to be reckoned with. Congratulations to Tia Sadler for signing to play with UBC-O next season! Thanks to Bill Sadler and Ken Dang for coaching the girls!
The Senior boys basketball program made a strong return to GSS after a year without a team. The team was very competitive throughout the season finishing 3rd at the Kootenay Zones. Thanks to Warren Chambers for coaching the team!
The Jr. girls and boys basketball teams both represented GSS well. Both teams were able to play a number of games in front of a home crowd, winning most of these. Thanks to Heather Jean for coaching the girls and Devin Solberg and Ross Horne for coaching the boys!
The Bantam girls basketball team showed great spirit throughout their season. Although the girls did not win many games, the girls played hard in each game and improved their skills along the way. Thanks to Kristin Hickey and Taylor Solberg for coaching the team!
The Bantam boys basketball team had a great season losing only one game all year. The boys won the East Kootenay Championships. Thanks to Kindy Gosal and Manjit Dhami for coaching the boys!
GSS hosted the Skiing and Snowboarding EK’s at Kicking Horse in February. Although none of our competitors qualified for Provincials, it was a great event in which our athletes represented GSS very all. Thanks to Mr. McCarthy for organizing the event!
The Spring sports season has finally arrived and the weather is actually starting to feel a bit like Spring. The Track & Field team, girls soccer teams, badminton team and golf teams will be competing in different events this Spring. The mountain biking club has also started with rides on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school.
I am already beginning to think of sports for next school year. We will be looking for coaches for the following teams:
Bantam (gr. 8) girls volleyball
Bantam girls basketball
Bantam boys basketball
Cross Country Running Team
Senior Boys soccer team
Senior girls soccer team
Please call me at the school if you are interested in coaching one of these teams or know of someone who would be a strong coach and may be interested in coaching next year!
Mr. Clint Dolgopol, Athletic Director
