Reaching Higher
Principal's Message

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think”.

A.A. Milne

I would like to open my comments by recognizing that J. Alfred Laird Elementary school is located on the shared and unceded traditional territory of the Ktunaxa and Secwepemc people.

J. Jensen.JPGAt J. Alfred Laird we recognize that each of our students is important and unique, bringing his/her talents and gifts to our school. This makes our school an amazing and diverse place. We believe in providing children with opportunities to develop skills, knowledge, and understanding through arts, culture, athletics, and academics.

Mount Nelson provides a stunning backdrop for our school and playgrounds making it easy to appreciate the beauty of our valley and the vast outdoor and environmental opportunities that exist here naturally – a wonderful place for our children to live and to learn. We are proud to offer a variety of enrichment opportunities for students. Our hockey program (in affiliation with Hockey Canada Skills Academy) provides enhanced fitness and training opportunities both on and off ice, and is available to interested students in grades 5 – 7, regardless of previous hockey or skating training. Silver Strings ukulele band provides musical training for students in grades 4 – 7 and the opportunity to travel and perform with a band. Intensive French provides an opportunity for students in grade 6 and beyond to develop French language skills. Place-based learning and inquiry are priorities for many of our teachers as we seek ways to connect our students to nature and the outdoors. We are grateful to our local First Nations – Akisqnuk and Secwepemc – who support and encourage our cultural awareness and learning and are important members of our school community. Our hope is to provide our students with as many diverse learning opportunities as possible as they recognize their strengths, their responsibilities and their place within community.

It is a privilege and an honour to work with a dedicated, professional, thoughtful staff, incredible students, supportive families and a helpful community! We strive to be a welcoming, caring and joyful space, recognizing that this happens most effectively and successfully when we work together.
