Welcome to the Nicholson Elementary School website!
Nicholson Elementary serves a vibrant, rural community stretching from Castledale and Harrogate in the south northwards to the outskirts of Golden, BC. We are part of Rocky Mountain School District No. 6, and we have a student population of just over 90 students enrolled in Kindergarten to Grade 7. We are a Leader in Me school, one of approximately 20 in British Columbia. As a Leader in Me school we learn and practice Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
To the right you will see our Nicholson Elementary vision statement. A vision statement is the foundation of a school. It states our aspirations, drives our decisions, and guides our goals. Over the 2017-18 school year our school community will be examining our values. Values state who we are and what we believe. Just as a vision is our foundation, values are our bedrock.
It has been several years since we thought about our values, and much has changed over that time. We have to ask ourselves if our current values, which are listed below, reflect the unique nature of our school community within the broader SD6 community (K-7, close-knit rural community). As well, they were written before we became a Leader in Me school, adpoted "Learn, Love, Lead!" as a motto, and so on. Currently, our values are:
Our school will provide a setting for all to:
· develop their individual potentials as learners.
· be appreciated for their unique strengths, talents and abilities.
· work together as part of a learning community.
· contribute to their classroom, school and community.
These are good values which, in my opinion, would apply to any school in BC. Our work this year will be to see if these values can be revised or restated in ways that better reflect the opportunities and strengths of our school.
As a principal it is my job to do all I can each day to support the journey of our students, staff, families and community in ways that honour and support our vision and values. If there is anything I can do to support you and your children on your journeys this year please let me know.
Mr. Bob Wilson
