Daily Physical Activity (DPA)

What is DPA?

Daily Physical Activity (DPA) is a Ministry of Education legislation.  It states that students in grades 9-12 must have 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

Junior Students

DTSS grade 8 and 9 PE program is linear, so students do not take PE each day.  We have introduced logs for students and the PE, Health, and Planning classes will be sharing these with students.  Our goal is to have students considering how are they remaining active on the days when they do not have PE.   Are they involved in team sports and practices?  Community sports?  Walking to school?  Intra-murals?  The Walk Run Club?  We would like to get to the point where these students are keeping brief and simple logs of what they do on these “off” days.

Senior Students

Our senior students must document and report their activity to the school.  Our senior PE classes are semestered, so if a student is taking PE 10 this semester, they will get it every day, and therefore meet the requirement.  Other classes also “count” such as Hockey and Superfit.  We are not asking students currently in a PE program to keep a log.

DPA in other courses

As part of Planning 10 and the Grad Transitions, the documentation of physical activity is stressed, and again the goal is an increased awareness of fitness levels and the importance of fitness for a healthy lifestyle.  Logs for the senior students will be part of the process.

Report Card Marks

As for a mark, students cannot earn a zero.  There is no numerical mark provided.  Students will receive an RM (Requirement Met) for working toward and meeting the goal of an active lifestyle.  There is no grade equivalent nor is it used as part of a GPA.  Furthermore, students cannot “fail” a grade due to the DPA requirements; any increase in student fitness is a gain!!
