Aman Virk Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will be granted to the Golden Secondary graduating student based on guidelines from the GSS Scholarship Committee, who shows an interest in pursuing political science at the post-secondary level.

Proof of registration and payment of tuition fees is required. This award can go to a student for one year or to a student or students for more than one year and can be extended up to 12 months. The $500 scholarship will be rolled over to the following year if there are no GSS graduates who have enrolled in a political science course.

Atma Sandher Volunteer Recognition Award

A scholarship will be granted by GSS to a graduate who has been or to graduates who have been actively volunteering in the community.

The Columbia Valley Credit Union and Atma Sandher and his family have contributed to a fund at the Golden & District Community Foundation to honor his long history of volunteer work in our community. The fund will form part of the GDCF Endowment Fund in perpetuity. Additions to the fund can be made at any time by payment to GDCF.

Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 440 (Golden Zone) Bursary

Financial need, academic achievement, future plans and citizenship.
The recipient has 2 full school years to register at the post-secondary institution of their choice. Monies will be dispensed upon receipt of a copy of tuition fees paid and proof of registration that is certified by the office of the registrar.

Bursaries will be awarded and shared annually by all graduating CUPE 440 children to a max of $500 each and a total to be shared of $1000. If there are 5 graduating: then each will receive a $200 bursary and if there is no son/daughter graduating, then no bursary will be awarded.

CMH Heli-Skiing Summer Adventures Scholarship

The award recipients must attend a recognized post-secondary institution (University, college, or technical institute).
Recipients will be well rounded individuals, demonstrating an interest in academics, the environment, outdoor pursuits and community activities. Ideally, the recipient will pursue a career in adventure tourism, hospitality operations, outdoor education, food services, massage therapy maintenance related trades and/or environmental studies.

The award payment will be forwarded upon proof of registration. The recipient has approximately 15 months to use the award. An extension may be negotiated if necessary.

Columbia Power Corporation Bursary

Graduating student who has demonstrated a real desire to excel, but who has not necessarily achieved the highest grade point average.

The candidate must register for full-time studies at a post-secondary institution within one year immediately following graduation. Columbia Power request that the School Award Committee select the candidate.

Columbia Valley Credit Union Bursaries

Graduating student who will be furthering their education in any field. Proof of registration and payment of tuition fees required.

These four awards of $2500 each are open to GSS graduates who will be furthering their education in any field and will be paid upon completion of the first semester.

The bursaries will go to two males and two females - subject to eligibility. CVCU preference for each, males and females - 1 Academic Bursary and 1 Vocational Bursary. The Credit Union will hold the bursary up to 18 months upon written notification from the recipient.

CUPE - Town of Golden (Local 2309) Municipal Employees Union Bursary

Must attend a full-time certification program. Must be an active member for a minimum of 6 months with the CVCU prior to applying. A onetime bursary is available for each child of Regular Full Time and Regular Part Time members in good standing of Local 2309.

Children for this bursary are defined as son, daughter, stepson and stepdaughter. Any other application from a casual member of Local 2309 for a bursary must be approved by a membership vote at a regular meeting.

Bursary is administered by Local 2309 Executive. The bursary is available up to five (5) years following graduation from a secondary school or equivalent.

Applicants must be family members of affiliates to the East Kootenay District Labour Council. The affiliated union must be indicated on the application form.  Please send potential candidates names to the above email if unsure of affiliation.

Applicants must be planning to attend a public post-secondary institution including trade schools. Funds can be deferred for up to two school years.

Applicants must produce a receipt of tuition before the cheque will be issued.  The receipt can be scanned to the above email as well.

Emcon Services Inc. Bursary

Students must be going on to post-secondary training or education. Students must state in essay format why they feel they are deserving of this bursary and what their plans are for it. Proof of registration and payment of tuition/fees required.

Students that also need that extra little push to further their education will also receive preference. Should no children/grandchildren of Emcon employees be eligible; bursary may be awarded to a deserving student meeting the other conditions.

Friend of Yoho Society Scholarship

Must be a graduating student of GSS. The recipient must be enrolled full-time in a program that contributes to scientific understanding of the natural world or the role that National Parks can play in society.

Programs that will be considered for qualifying: biology, ecology, geography, forestry, conservation enforcement and environmental studies.

Proof of enrollment of qualifying program (letter to the board of admission stating successful enrollment has been achieved or maintained. To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must write an essay of 300 words detailing the applicant's interests, education and why they feel they should be awarded the scholarship.

Award of the scholarship: in the event the required proof of enrollment is not forthcoming from the first place essay author, the second, or if necessary the third place applicant will be given an opportunity to prove they have met all the eligibility requirements.

Future Contractors Scholarship

Recipient must be enrolled in a college leve trades program geared towards construction. Proof of registration and payment of tuition required. This scholarship will be granted to the GSS graduating student based on guidance from the GSS Scholarship Committee, who in entering a college level trade program geared towards construction.

Golden & District Minor Hockey Sportsmanship Bursary

The applicant must have plans to enroll in a post-secondary university, college or technical institute in any field or should have plans to continue their hockey career.

The recipient must send proof of registration or copy of their player card to GSS by the scholarship due date of their grad year. Proof of registration and payment of tuition fees is required.

A $500 bursary will be awarded annually to a student or students who have graduated from GSS and have members of the Golden & District Minor Hockey for a min of 3 years. Preference will be given to well-rounded individuals who have demonstrated an interest in academics, sports and community activities. The Board of Golden & District Minor Hockey will select the winning recipient each year.

Golden Administrators Bursary

Graduating student must be the child of an active member of the Chapter or the child of the spouse of an active member, and must be proceeding onto post-secondary education. Proof of registration and payment of tuition is required.

The Chapter will represent a $500 bursary to each eligible member. If there are no eligible students then the Chapter will present a single bursary of $500 to a graduating student of GSS who is proceeding to post-secondary education. Students may defer this award for a period of one school year.

Golden Bakery/Student Leadership Bursary

It is awarded to a member of the graduating class in recognition of that member's leadership and contributions at the school. Proof of registration and payment of tuition fees is required. $500 bursary is provided by the Golden Bakery ($300) and the students of GSS ($200)

Golden District Rd & Gun Club Bursaries

The Club offers up to three bursaries of no less than $1000 each to support a GSS student in pursuit of post secondary education. These bursaries are open to all GSS school graduates (membership in the CDRGC is not required). Preference will be given to individuals who are outdoor enthusiasts, are concerned about wilderness conservation and/or pursuing studies related to the environment.

Applicants are to write a 300-500 word essay detailing their interests and background related to the outdoors/conservations, their post-secondary plans, any volunteer work related to these endeavors and why they are deserving of this award. After two months in their program, the recipient will provide proof of payment of tuition and confirmation of attendance in their program to GSS.

Golden Golf Club Bursary

Graduated student from GSS who plans to go on to post secondary education in any field. With approval from the Board of Golden Gold Club this bursary may be deferred for a max of 1 year after official graduation.

Recipient must have been a member of a recognized Jr. Golf Program for a min of 3 years prior to graduation who plans to go on to post secondary education in any field. Proof of registration and payment of tuition is required. The program must be at least 6 months in duration and at least a 60% course load.

Golden Teacher's Association Bursary

Graduation students must be a son/daughter of an active GTA member or the child of the spouse of an active GTA member. Student must present proof of registration and paid tuition to GSS. The GTS shall allot $2400 per annum for scholarships, to be shared equally among eligible graduates to a max. of $600 per graduate. May defer for 1 school year.

Applicant must go on to post secondary education in the following year (College, Vocational, Technological, etc.). Applicants who are an active member in good standing with Golden Volunteer Firefighter's Junior members will be given priority consideration.

If there is no junior member graduating then priority consideration will be given to a graduate whose parent is a member in good standing of the association. Proof of registration and payment of tuition is required. May be deferred for 1 year.

Work ethic and a determination to succeed is the main focus of this bursary rather than academic achievement. Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates financial need.

The student should be focused on a career goal and must be enrolled in post-secondary studies. The bursary is only to graduates of whom one or both parents are GSS alumni. This bursary may be deferred for 1 year.

Applicants must write a short essay and detail their contributions to the community for the last 3 years as well as their plan for their post-secondary education. May defer for 1 year. Recipient must be available for a photo opportunity at KHCCC as the cheque is handed out and must provide permission to make the photo public.

Kicking Horse Culture Cultural Contribution Award

Applicants are asked to submit a letter of request for consideration outlining the activities of the applicant's contribution along with a personal reflection on the benefits that have been accrued to the applicant from his community contribution.

Applicants must provide a referral letter (from someone who has witnessed or participated in the applicants contribution) which reflects on the applicant's contribution and comments on the applicant's letter and the value that the applicant has placed on their contribution.

Any applicant who has been an active member will be given priority consideration. That is: Former and current Leo Club members. Nathan Emery Memorial Bursary

Student must be a Golden Secondary School graduate. This is the only academic criteria.

Student should have demonstrated an appreciation for the wilderness and respect for the environment. For many students this may be shown by choosing to spend time in outdoor activities.

Preference will be given to the student who has demonstrated over time an interest in and participation in non-motorized outdoor activities. However, some students may have only recently developed an interest in outdoor pursuits and wilderness adventure.  They are also encouraged to apply for this bursary.

Physicians of the Golden Medial Clinic Bursary

This $1000 bursary is open to a graduating student from Golden Secondary School who is planning on pursuing studies in a medical field. This includes medicine, nursing, lab/diagnostic imaging/ultrasound technology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietary or paramedicine. Good scholastic standing is required. Financial need will be considered.

Rotary Club of Golden Bursary

Student must graduate from Golden Secondary School

This bursary is for $1,000 per year with a timeframe for disbursement limited to 3 years or $750 limited to 4 years. If the recipient is enrolled in a 2-year program they are still eligible for the full $3,000. In this case, $1,500 will be distributed each year. The recipient may choose to work for a year and would still receive the total amount of the 3,000 bursaries if they attended post-secondary studies for the following 3 to 4 years.  Or the recipient can attend the 1st year, take the 2nd year off and still receive 1,000 for the next two years. If the recipient does not proceed to post-secondary for 2 years, then the total award would be $2,000 ($1,000 for each year).

Students can attend any post-secondary institution such as vocational school, college, technical school, university, apprenticeship, distance learning etc. Students can be full time or part time but must take a minimum of 9 credits per year.

Preference for eligibility will be given to students who are in financial need.

Must complete an essay that demonstrates they represent Rotary core values: service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership. The essay must be between 300-800 words.

Applicant must provide a reference letter from a member of the community.

Applications will be reviewed, and recipient will be chosen by the Rotary Club of Golden BC.

The Eugene and Irene Larue Memorial Trust Fund

A student must be a graduate of GSS and must be entering his/her first year of post-secondary study, in any field. Proof of registration and payment of tuition fees is required.

It applies to graduates of the current school year or the previous school year. The amount of this award varies depending on the number of applicants. Cheques are issued by GSS at the end of November.

This memorial trust fund was bequeathed to the Golden Teacher's Association to be held in trust for GSS graduates. Every student should apply for this bursary.

Town of Golden Bursary

Student who is a graduate of GSS and is continuing his/her education at a post secondary institution and is a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and citizenship abilities during his/her graduating year.

Proof of registration and payment of tuition is required. This bursary will be disbursed in $500 increments per semester, subject to proof of registration and payment of tuition and the total disbursements timeframe shall not exceed 3 years.

If the total disbursements by approved increments is not complete within 3 years from initial award, no further disbursements will be approved. Award selection committee of the school will evaluate the following attributes: representation of Leadership Class, leadership in school/community clubs or groups, leadership in school/community athletic teams, personal accomplishment that serve to promote or benefit Golden on a Regional, Provincial or National basis.

A child of a currently serving Member of Town Council will not be considered eligible for this bursary.

Western Communities Foundation Inspirational Award

Student who has displayed outstanding community and/or school spirit as an organizer, participant, or volunteer and/or has demonstrated inspirational conduct, whether an act of heroism or leadership in a crisis and/or overcome adversity (mental/physical disability/financial hardship/family issues).

Award is for a student who intends to seek further training or education to become a productive citizen, and not based on academic achievement. The student may be nominated by any member of the school teaching staff, support or administrative staff, or by the school parent council executive.

If more than one student is nominated it is the school's responsibility to choose the winning candidate.

BC/Yukon Command of the Royal Cdn. Legion Foundation

Students Must be going into a field of Health Science. The Legion require a copy of student's acceptance letter and Student ID#. Must go to a Kimberley student. Cannot be deferred. Award based on scholastics, citizenship and need.

Columbia Basin Trust Youth Community Service Award

Applicant must be a student graduating from a Basin secondary school, alternate school or other institution that grants Ministry of Education recognized graduation diplomas. The applicant must be no more than 20 years of age; and must currently live within the Columbia Basin Region. The emphasis for award selection is on impactful and meaningful volunteer service that fosters community well being. Added weight will be given to activities that focus on providing benefit to Basin communities, but other volunteer service will be considered. These awards are not based on academic achievement but rather volunteer service activity.

Columbia Power Corporation Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating student who has fulfilled high school graduation requirements and will be enrolled in a recognized post secondary institution within one year of graduating. The candidate is an individual who has demonstrated excellence in achievement during their senior year. This doesn't mean achieving the highest GPA but that the recipient has worked hard and has shown a real desire to excel for themselves. Must be registered in full time studies within 1 year immediately following graduation; and funding can only be applied against the cost of tuition and/or books. May be deferred for 1 year.

Credit Union Foundation of BC: Garry Ermacora Memorial Scholarship

To a graduating student whose career goal is to become a medical doctor. If there is a satisfactory candidate, the award will be offered to a student currently enrolled in a medical program who previously attended Selkirk. This award cannot be deferred. Students planning to enter the area of medicine (not dentistry) may be considered.

An award is offered to a graduating student continuing their education on an art program at the post secondary level whose career goal is in the visual arts (i.e.. Art teacher, painter). If there is no satisfactory candidate, the award will be offered to a student currently enrolled in an art program who previously attended Selkirk. To commemorate artist Shirley Lewis Smith of Kimberley. This award cannot be deferred.

Don Davies Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will be given to a student who has demonstrated satisfactory academic performance proceeding into a university or college on a full-time basis in the field of Education. Priority will be given to a student enrolled in Physical Education. Further consideration will be given to a student who has volunteer experience, is an active community member and/or involved in leadership activities within the school or community. Payment will be made after proof of acceptance of, and first semester payment has been made, to a school or continuing education.

This scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled at a post secondary institution. The recipient will be a good citizen of Selkirk Secondary and will demonstrate commitment to the Kimberley Rotary Club's principle of "Service Above Self" in the broader community. A letter of not more than one typed page must be submitted outlining the student's community service record and summarizing what Service means to him/her and how it has affected their goals and achievements. The recipient may be asked to speak to the Rotary Club at one of its regular meetings. This award may be deferred for 1 year provided the recipient requests the deferral in writing.

Kimberley Nordic Club

Applicants should be under 20 years of age and should have demonstrated outstanding effort to either excel in the sport or support the sport of cross-country skiing in a significant way. A formal letter of application should explain why the applicant thinks he/she should receive these funds and what he/she intends to do in the future. Any registered KNC member in the recent ski season is welcome to apply for one of these scholarships.

Selection will be based on attitude, effort & community involvement. It is awarded to a student who is pursuing post-secondary studies in the field of foods, agriculture, horticulture or art. May be deferred for one (1) year.

Kootenay Freewheels Cycling Club

To a deserving student who has demonstrated satisfactory academic performance proceeding into a technology, university, college or vocational school on a full-time basis. Can be deferred for 1 year; however, recipient must notify the Freewheel's Club by December 31st with their confirmation information or to advise of other intentions. If a student intends to postpone continued education, the Bursary will be held up to Dec 31st of the following year at which time we receive the confirmation noted, or the award will be permanently withdrawn.

Selkirk Secondary School Parent Advisory Council - Community Service & Volunteerism Award

To Grade 12 students who demonstrate a high level of community involvement and volunteerism, and understand the value, responsibility and importance of community service and volunteerism (can include a combination of activities such as paid work, participation in sports, volunteer activities, membership in community/school clubs, etc.).

Must have attended Selkirk Secondary for at least 1 year including grade 12 and be planning to pursue post secondary studies (academic, technical, vocational or other career training) in Canada for 3 years of receiving this award. Must provide proof of payment for registration, tuition or books totaling the value of the scholarship awarded. To apply, student must include a 250 word personal cover letter/essay including information about interests and reasons why being a positive active member in society is important and how your contributions benefit our community. Three letters of reference must also be included, one from an educator and two from community members all who have witnessed your activities (not a relative of the applicant).

A university, technical college, trade or business school scholarship is available to a Grade 12 student who is a resident of Wasa, Ta Ta Creek, Skookumchuk rural area, graduating from Selkirk Secondary, Kimberley , Mt Baker Secondary, Cranbrook, a private school or is home schooled. Applicant must provide evidence of acceptance in a course of studies to receiving funding. Scholarship can be deferred for 2 years. $750 first year and $750 second year if eligible to continue.
