Rocky Mountain School District No. 6

Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 (RMSD6) is pleased to announce that the new art room at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) is complete. Students and staff have moved out of the temporary location they occupied for almost 3 months to the new space and are finding renewed energy as they continue to learn and create together.

DTSS is a unique situation because the facility has shared space with College of the Rockies (COTR). In March of 2022, RMSD6 provided a letter of support for COTR to expand in their current location at DTSS, changing the current high school art room into another classroom for the college. In exchange, the College would build a new art room for DTSS, located on the west side of the building. The partnership has worked well for many years.

Funding was accessed by COTR for additional space and the School District worked together with COTR to ensure the space requirements are optimal for both parties. The new art room design gave our staff an opportunity to make adjustments and improve the space they have been using for the last twenty-two years. Further, the increased capacity at the COTR will improve the collaboration between DTSS and the COTR on educational programs which will benefit the students in both institutions.

Principal Mike Hubick stated, "We waited months as we witnessed the new DTSS art room rise from ground that it now occupies.  The process captured the imagination of many young artists.  It also captured the imaginations of future engineers, trades people, and architects.  The final product is an amazing space that is large and bright".

RMSD6 is grateful for the strong partnership with College of the Rockies.
