Today, we pause to recognize and honour the heroism, sacrifice, and contribution of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Veterans who protected and served the country we now call Canada. Despite being denied various rights of Canadian citizenship, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Veterans left their families to fight for Canada. When they returned home, they were welcomed into the arms of their families, yet at the same time, they were stripped of their status and treaty rights, meaning they had no place on the reserve. When trying to join Veterans organizations and receive support, they were often turned away. It wasn't until 1994 that they began receiving the respect, acknowledgement, and recognition they deserved for their services in wars. To this day, we are still uncovering how Indigenous Veterans were treated for their services. Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 expresses gratitude to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Veterans and encourages everyone to take some time to learn about and honour both present and past Indigenous Veterans.
