Next week, Selkirk Secondary School presents the high school version of "Be More Chill, the musical" (Rated PG 13) from May 3-6 at McKim Theatre.
Be More Chill is a musical based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. It follows unpopular high school student and social outcast Jeremy Heere, who is considered a loser by his peers. Deeply unsatisfied with his poor reputation and lack of romantic and sexual progress with his crush Christine, Jeremy obtains a SQUIP (an acronym for Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor), a supercomputer in the form of a pill that travels to his brain upon ingestion and radically transforms Jeremy’s behavior and social status by giving him advice on how to be cool.
Be More Chill does have some mature content that audiences may want to be aware of. There is some mature language, references to teen drug and alcohol use, brief mentions of suicide, and talk of sex. Overall, the show is light, but it does have some heavy moments.
Students in grades younger than grade 8 will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian or bring a note of permission from their parent/guardian.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and are available at the Snowdrift Cafe and the Selkirk School office.
